How TENS Can Reduce Pain in Labor

Written by Birth Doula, Judy Key, CD(DONA), CCE

What is a TENS Unit?

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a non-invasive, drug-free technology which can be used to empower laboring mothers by relieving pain. The TENS unit is a small, lightweight, battery-powered, handheld control, like a TV remote, with wires that connect to small adhesive pads placed on the lower back. We are excited to offer this effective pain management tool!

You may have heard of TENS used by physical therapists, but it is also very effective for pain management in labor and childbirth. The TENS has been found especially helpful for back labor. The sensation is like a buzzing or tingling which stimulates nerves and reduces pain, possibly by increasing natural endorphins: the "feel-good" chemicals that can improve mental attitude and provide pain relief. The majority of moms who used it in labor say that they would definitely use it again. One of our laboring clients said, "The TENS is my best friend!" after using it for just an hour.

TENS Technology is Not New.

In fact, it's been in the US since the 1970s - but until recently, TENS technology has been more commonly used to relieve labor pain in other countries. The technology is safe for both mom and baby, easy-to-use, does not interfere with the labor process, and gives laboring moms control of their pain in a unique way. Studies have shown that the use of TENS during labor delayed or reduced the use of other medications for pain relief.

The system is easy-to-use which allows you to walk and move freely during labor. Of course, as an electrical device, the TENS unit should not get wet and cannot be used in the water. TENS works as a safe distraction - another sensation to concentrate on during contractions! Since it is controlled by the person in labor, you can set the level that works for you and can change it easily at any time. It's easy to put on and take off and can simply be turned off whenever you’d like without any residual effects.

TENS is most effective when used as soon as pain is difficult to ignore, but can be used throughout labor whenever you need it.

At New Life Birth Services, we use TENS units that are specifically made for obstetric use. We have birth doulas that are specially trained and certified to support the use of TENS for pain management in labor.
